1) Ensure your
website is professional looking.
Almost
everyone dislikes looking at website that reminds them of a standard
book report they wrote back in school. Invest in a good web design
program (Dreamweaver, Microsoft Expression Web and the less
expensive XsitePro are good picks),
and learn how to use
it. When creating a website, let your creative juices flow and make
sure the web design is compelling, well-designed, easy to navigate
and organized. Web surfers dislike having to weed through haystacks
of cyber files in your website to get the information that
they want.
On that note, do not make it a heavy
and cluttered site. Putting up flash intros can be a great eye
candy, but the average internet surfer will not wait more than 10 seconds for a
web page to load, and then they are off to the next site.
2) Submit your
website URLs to search engines and web directories.
Printing your URL on business cards
and bugging your family, relatives and friends to check out your
website won’t exactly increase and sustain your web
traffic. Submitting your website URLs to search engines will make it
easier and more effective for people to find you, provided that your
web page carries the topics they are searching for. To understand how
a typical search engine works, think of it as a “spider”: It
crawls stealthily through your website, picking up words,
images, information and URLs which would later be indexed in the
search engine’s database. So make sure you strategically pepper
your website with important keywords you think are relevant and are what
people are looking for.
Web directories, like Yahoo! and DMOZ are
operated by humans who actually categorize the websites submitted
manually. Besides these two, there are
many directories in the web you should try to get
your website URLs listed. There are many companies out
there who advertise and offer to submit your website to over
1000s web directories instantly using their sophisticated software. Some
even made claims that your website rankings in the search engines
will improve drastically after submission. As tempting and as
convenient this may sound, I am still very skeptical about using
automated submission tool excessively or aggressively.
Imagine if you are able to submit to over 1000s
web directories instantly using software, what will the search
engine spiders, like Google, think when they notice that your
website backlinks suddenly increases from let's say 30 to 1000s in
less than a week. That definitely doesn't appear to be very natural
and this will raise a red flag to the search engines. They have reasons
to suspect you are attempting to manipulate your link popularity
through automated means.
Slow and steady natural link building wins the race.
If you are really concern about your online business, my advice
is that you take your time to do manual or semi-automatic submissions
to the web directories and build your link popularity the
safe and surest way.
3) Build your
backlinks over time.
Find
other websites that carry similar content as yours and request to
exchange links. Create attractive banners to be placed on other
websites, and offer to the same for them on your site. Add your
website URLs on your e-mail signature. Leave your digital signature
with your anchor text backlinks when making comments or asking
questions on forums, blogs, Yahoo! Answers and social networks.
Submit articles to Press Release websites and article directories.
All with the sole intention of building your backlinks over
time.
4) Advertise offline
for your online business.
The world of cyberspace isn’t
the only place to get you noticed. Write up sizzling press releases
and send them to local newspapers and magazines. Print out
attractive fliers to be distributed. Just make sure that your
website is already up and running.
5) Interact with your readers.
Put up
forums or message boards for your web visitors to interact with each
other. Set up blogs and keep your readers updated through your
blogs. Create an email subscription list so you can send your
visitors about new developments, and always be open to feedback -
that’s what will make your website even better.
Follow
the methods above and you will certainly make your
webiste more visible in the world wide web and able drive truckload
of web traffic to your website consistently over
time.
